Erich Avinger does something special with the Spanish guitar throughout the very Western flavored Si, adding to it memorable, mostly bouncy melodies with some odd but often interesting textures. While he sticks mostly to light fusion and pop-jazz with a slight mainstream base at times, his adventure on the electric guitar driven "Global Village" (which features bamboo flutes and Tibetan bells) is quite remarkable. The sweetness of tunes such as "The Light Still Shines" and "Persephone" prove Avinger to be a deft, thoughtful composer as well, and pianists Rick Jackson and Paul English add a little romance to the proceedings. The only clunker is the meandering three part "Saudade" sweep. Otherwise, a smooth and likeable winner.
