This volume in Profil's Edition Günter Hänssler features German conductor Klaus Tennstedt in music by composers he never commercially recorded: Mozart and Sibelius. Best known in the West as a Mahler/ Bruckner/Wagner conductor, Tennstedt had spent decades leading East German orchestras in the standard repertoire before his sudden ascension to international superstar in the early '70s. In these 1977 recordings of Mozart's Symphonies No. 1 and No. 32, recordings made with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Tennstedt shows himself to have been a Mozart conductor of strength, majesty, and grace, an approach that works as well in the mature Symphony No. 32 of Mozart's 23rd year as in the exceedingly youthful Symphony No. 1 of his seventh year. The following 1978 recording of Sibelius' Violin Concerto, with soloist Yuval Yaron, is even more impressive, a powerful and passionate performance pitting the virtuosic Yaron against the impetuous Tennstedt, and both come out on top with as fine a recording as the piece has ever had. Both recordings are expertly remastered by Profil's engineers and the result is a recording that will appeal to Tennstedt's fans and anyone who loves compelling performances of great music.
