R&B certainly came back into vogue at the end of the 2010s, yet it’s never easy for veterans of a genre to adapt to its new sounds. On her ninth album in a thirty-year career, Angie Stone may well have discovered the recipe to make something new with something not so old. She respects the sensual codes of her era, retains her love for acoustic instruments inherited from her beginnings in D'Angelo’s wake (or more broadly of the Soulquarians collective), while incorporating rhythms with aromas reminiscent of Atlanta on Kiss You and Good Man. This balance is due, on the one part, to her willpower, but also to the four architects of this Love Language; namely Walter Millsap III, Xavier Gordon, Balewa Muhammad, and Candice Nelson. The overall consistency is striking, sculpted for fans of the genre who grew up with a particular affection for cheesy sounds, but still love to hear R'n'B going forward. How is it even possible to imagine that Angie Stone is 61 at this album’s release? An obviously intact voice, inexhaustible youthful themes, sought-after arrangements...
