Long Lost is the fourth album by Californian indie folk quartet, Lord Huron, led as ever by brainy vocalist Ben Schneider from Lansing, Michigan. When it comes to this album, the frontman's hometown is no minor detail: the band's name, Lord Huron, refers to Lake Huron, one of North America's five Great Lakes, which abuts the state of Michigan in the heart of the USA. It is a place which left a strong impression on Schneider who spent countless evenings making music by a lakeside campfire.

Timeless Americana flows through Schneider’s veins, and its influence is as clear as ever on this album. The first chords of The Moon Doesn't Mind have a rather ambient quality, before the real western sound comes in, bringing with it the feel of a concert somewhere deep in the American past. After that, we move through tracks like Mine ForeverLove Me Like You Used To or Long Lost, the album’s title track, a flamboyant epic which manages to be both heroic and anachronistic at once. The Lord Huron fansbase will be seduced by the whiff of the timeless Great Plains and intimations of a lost American golden age which this album evokes. This is a postcard vision of America, translated into cinematic, evocative music. It’s for this reason that the group has become the darling of American TV and film, with music credits in shows such as ShamelessMan Seeking Woman13 Reasons WhyOnce Upon a TimeGrey’s Anatomy and The Good Doctor. One would imagine this album is set to follow the same path with its share of wistful ballads like Twenty Long Years or Where Did the Time Go. Listening to this record, one can easily imagine the four band members on horseback with their Stetsons pulled down against the Californian desert sun. © Yan Céh / Qobz
