Despite its clear strengths and a poignant melodic thread, Infinite Granite, released in 2021, divided Deafhaven’s fanbase. The eclipse of the black metal edge by an overwhelming shoegaze sound didn’t sit well with everyone (even though it was a logical evolution upon closer inspection of the Californian band’s discography). Four years later, just as expectations were getting murky, the musicians deliver their heaviest album yet, marking an arrival back in blackgaze territory, delivered with palpable, sustained tension throughout and its own truly heartbreaking beauty. Beyond the furious drumming that makes a fierce comeback with blast beats and double kick drums right from the start ("Doberman"), Lonely People With Power is defined by the return of unleashed guitars, weaving with genuinely melancholic post-rock atmospheres. This could all be mistaken for a mere step backwards - and what a mistake this would be. Deafheaven seem to have found the perfect balance between the fury of their early days, the adventurous spirit of their iconic Sunbather (2013), and the melodic beauty they developed on Infinite Granite—minus the clean vocals.
"Magnolia"’s rawer edge is juxtaposed with "Regulator"’s ultra-aggressive riffs, while "The Garden Route" and "Heathen" flirt with post-punk without sacrificing their dark character, where George Clarke’s screams won’t let you forget that black metal is very much present in the arena, ready to batter your senses between more tranquil phases. This masterfully controlled return to rage is just one of the many treasures found in Lonely People With Power, an album that will take multiple listens to mature an appreciation for all of its atmospheres (including those distilled in the eerie "Incidental II" or the sublime "Winona," a perfect example of top-tier blackgaze).
Deafheaven delivers a major statement with an album that will have disillusioned fans rushing back, yet holding on tight to those who embraced their more recent works. A true tour de force. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz Read more
