Pianist Niu Niu was a child prodigy, and one might think that he would have turned frequently to the type of album heard here, filled with showpieces and encores, but this is actually his first one, and he updates the old formulas effectively. There is plenty of virtuosity on hand from Liszt, Prokofiev, and Earl Wild, as well as a blistering Rage Over a Lost Penny, Op. 129, of Beethoven. What Niu Niu grasps is that it really is the interstices of such a recital that make it work or not. The program should be unexpected, and it should be fun; Niu Niu's is both. He includes slower pieces of many different flavors, from Chinese to Norwegian New Age to the prog-pop of Ryuichi Sakamoto, and wraps it all up with an arrangement of Amazing Grace. It remains to be seen where this fearsomely talented young pianist is going in his full adulthood, but for the present, he has taken an idea that could have been dull as dishwater and made it into a delightful romp.
