The Corvina Consort is a young Hungarian period performance group with barely five summers under its belt. It is committed to bringing light to some shady corners of that most under-investigated period in musical history, the Renaissance. In Claude le Jeune: Airs & Pseaumes, the Corvina Consort brings the weight of its artistry to bear on the major French composer of the late Renaissance, and although the results are mixed, it is nonetheless a disc worth seeking out. Claude le Jeune: Airs & Pseaumes consists of selections taken from two posthumously published collections of le Jeune's works; 13 pieces from Airs à 3, 4, 5 et 6 parties (1601) and Pseaumes en vers mesurez mis en musique (1606). In respect to the purely secular Airs, Corvina Consort is to be commended for skipping well-known works from this huge collection such as Gentil amoureux in favor of lesser-known items, which are presented in a variety of ways ranging from solo treatments with only a couple of instruments to a more complex representation of the parts. Not all of this works as well in a single sitting as one would like -- in the midst of the set drawn from the Airs there is a certain sameness to many of the selections, which tends to bog the proceedings down. However, there are exceptions, particularly the song Trink, trink, trink, where the Corvina Consort makes its best comic effort in transmitting this obscure number -- a depiction of a drunken German singing a lusty drinking song in deliberately bad French. Another highlight is soprano Judit Andrejszki's touching and deeply felt performance of the love song D'un coeur fier. On the other hand, the Pseaumes are done really very well here. There are no instruments used, and the singing is splendid, particularly in the more difficult, chromatic pieces such as Tourne ailleurs ta riguer. Hungaroton's recorded sound is warm and upfront, quite a welcome departure from its usual approach to choral music, which tends to be a bit too far away.
