Like a refreshing dessert after the meal that was Pins and Needles, the Birthday Massacre deliver some new tracks and remixes on Imaginary Monsters. Featuring three new songs, the EP continues to expand the band’s sound into more atmospheric territories, especially on the ethereal “Left Behind,” a synth pop slow jam that unfolds amidst a sea of synthesizers and lurching drums. Where the EP really shines, though, is the remixes. Combichrist deliver a fractured remix of “Shallow Grave,” chopping the beat of the song up to give it a harder edge that seems ready-made to beat up dancefloors, while Skold gives “Pins and Needles” a stomping, industrial edge, adding a pulsing beat to the song to give it a relentless, marching quality. With only a few new tracks, Imaginary Monsters isn’t an essential release, but fans looking for a bit of gloom to dance to will find a lot to love here.
