Singer-songwriter Logan Ledger delivers lines that Merle Haggard or Buck Owens could have written. "All the wine in California couldn't ease my worried mind/ At the bottom of each bottle is the love I left behind," he sings on "All The Wine in California" from his second full length album where Ledger, whose self-titled debut was produced by T-Bone Burnett and featured jazz guitarist Marc Ribot, expands the definition of modern California country further. Past and present meld on Golden State as he stirs in diverse influences from Gene Clark, Scott Walker and—not surprisingly given his vocal abilities—Roy Orbison, whos eapproach is echoed in originals like the heartbreak lament, "Midnight in L.A.," where "For every dream that's born/ Another has to die." Raised in the Bay Area, Ledger gravitated to Nashville where he's become a leading light in that boom town's retro/alt-country rock music scene. A duet with Erin Rae, another member of that same promising community, on "Some Misty Morning," is another highlight as together they evoke cosmic country's immortal animating force, "Some misty morning/ When the wind whistling by/ Sounds like mermaids singing in the ocean/ Sorrow will come to an end." Judicious use of reverb in a tune like "I'm Not Here," adds a classic country touch. Ledger says the dreamy title track—framed by strings, cymbals on a snare and pedal steel—is both an evocation of his home state and an interior metaphor. "It's about trying to find your way to contentment or self-actualization and never quite getting there, but understanding that the quest itself is still important." Produced by Waylon Jennings' son, Shooter,  and recorded by David Spreng at the famed Sunset Sound studios in Los Angeles, the sound of Golden Hour is spacious and lush with Jennings on piano, Wurlitzer, organ and celesta, Cage the Elephant guitarist Nick Bockrath, veteran Russ Pahl on pedal steel and a rhythm section of Jennings' bassist Ted Russell Kamp and drummer Jaime Douglass. Gifted with an inspirational voice, both taste and talent in his songwriting, and an inclusive definition of country music, Ledger is a young star in the making.  © Robert Baird/Qobuz
