It's hard to make a (first) name for yourself when you're a Pollini; and also hard to avoid barbs from envious types of all stripes. Daniele Pollini, naturally, was raised surrounded by art, architecture and music from his earliest youth. Milanese down to his fingertips, he started playing piano almost from infancy, he latter developed a passion for natural sciences and for painting, which he pursued alongside music. He admired his father, but also Benedetti Michelangeli, Horowitz, Richter and Schnabel, which was a way of reconciling the two aspects of his own nature, which oscillates between cerebrality and intuition.

At the age of 20, Daniele inherited a splendid house from his grandfather, the famous architect Gino Pollini. It was in this perfect place for a musician to flourish, right in the heart of Milan, that the young man lived, surrounded by his books and his piano. Although his love for his home town, a veritable cultural capital for contemporary art, music, fashion and design, stimulated and nourished his imagination, he wasn't too tied to it to visit his other favourite cities, Paris, Rome and Venice.
We recently enjoyed Daniele Pollini playing a four-handed piece with his father in the suite En blanc et noir by Debussy. And here it is, on his first record published by Deutsche Grammophon (DG), with a programme which is as intelligent as it is audacious, and ties together the strands of a tradition, starting with Études Op. 10 by Chopin and ending with Stockhausen's famous Klavierstück IX by way of the last works of Scriabin. It's a thrilling journey which starts in romanticism, finding mystical resonances in Russia, and ends in the things left unsaid in a Stockhausen free of any Germanic influence, and who looks rather to the composers of the American avant-garde like John Cage and Henry Cowell. © François Hudry/Qobuz
