CeeLo Green’s has one of those voices which, when pushed into a corner, unleashes real power, volume and expression. This is what has characterised the Atlanta native's last five albums as well as his work in the Gnarls Barkley duo (with producer Danger Mouse). But CeeLo Green has changed. Not in terms of his influences, which remain firmly in the sixties as reflected on Don’t Lie or I Wonder How Love Feels (which borrows its orchestration from Curtis Mayfield), but in terms of the composition itself which has been inherited from the Nashville sound and, more precisely, from producer Dan Auerbach's studio. CeeLo Green's usual irrepressible persona is absent here. In the place of force and strength, it is restraint that prevails here, even in the more energetic tracks like Doing It All Together. It’s as if this version of Thomas Callaway is a clone sent from the depths of time, a time in which Green had always believed in himself but had never fully embraced. On this album, Green's vocals evoke those of Stevie Wonder (People Watching), exquisitely soulful and commanding. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
