After celebrating their 25-year anniversary with three albums (a 42-track anthology compilation entitled twenty-five, and two albums called Versions et Versions Remixed which revisit their classic tracks), all released between 2019 and 2020, Archive are back with their 12th studio album. Six years after The False Foundation (2016), the English band have dropped a XXL double record including 17 tracks that are not in any way undermined by the FM format. Recorded by the legendary RAK studios in London (where the Who, the Cure, Radiohead, Muse and Placebo have also recorded), Call to Arms & Angels was inspired by “a world that’s becoming stranger and more troubling every day.” This is a darker record, shown through the distorted guitars that transport us back to the band’s prog rock of the 90s. However, Archive takes this concept a bit further, driving crowds wild and helping listeners let off some steam with synthetic post-punk tracks like Numbers and The Crown. This London group handles contrast as well as they always have, as evidenced in Enemy with Pollard Berrier’s vocals (which are also present on the more pop-inspired track Fear There & Everywhere) and on Daytime Coma (featuring Dave Pen from BirdPen), a 14-minute epic that sits somewhere between rock and electronica. This track is both hypnotic and moving and is a treat for both body and mind: the trademark of a successful band that’s as trailblazing as ever. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
