Big-hearted, open-hearted, warm-hearted, take your pick: whatever its other attributes, Carlo Maria Giulini's 1975 recording of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the London Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus has a heart as big as all outdoors. Under Giulini's tender hands, the Missa Solemnis is above all else a lyrical work, a work where every line sings and every instrument is a voice. One gets the sense that Giulini loves every note and every musician and every moment of the performance, and his affection transforms his Missa Solemnis into a festival of love. This is, of course, a good thing and pretty much what Beethoven was driving at when he said of the Missa Solemnis that it "comes from the heart," but love is not all there is to the work. And while Giulini's Missa Solemnis has a lot of heart, it doesn't have much else going for it. Which is not to say that it is not superbly sung and played; Giulini's British musicians give him their best. It is to say that the work is not all there. The profound soulfulness, the transcendent spirituality, the overwhelming sense that the numinous is imminent: all of it and everything is drowned in Giulini's sea of love. As heartfelt as Giulini's is, stick with Otto Klemperer's 1965 recording, one of the most sublime recordings ever made. EMI's stereo sound was a little dim and distant in its day and the digital remastering is only a little better.
