On sale -30%Ella Fitzgerald did not revolutionise vocal jazz but embodied it. With her incredible range, her astounding sense of improvisation and her very own way of taking freedom by the scruff of the neck and making it swing like never before, she went through the 20th century never worrying about the trends or the evolution of jazz, a genre to which she gave so much. Before she became the queen of be-bop she was an orchestral singer, confronting all the instrumentalists with her powerful vocals. As she liked to say, "I just tried to do [with my voice] what I heard the horns in the band doing." Ella Fitzgerald made everything she touched her own, including the Great American Songbook, whose pages were filled by geniuses such as Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and even Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, two geniuses whose work features in this BD Music compilation. On this record we hear Fitzgerald make 42 tracks her own with her unique phrasing, her scat, her high-pitched scratches and the pure velvet of her vocals. Timeless. Marc Zisman/Qobuz
This double CD aims to present the best of the first three albums devoted to these "song books", which come from Duke Ellington (in the company of the duke and his men), Rodgers & Hart, and Cole Porter. There were without doubt some difficult choices to make due to the quality of Ella's interpretation, the richness of the musical material and the efficiency of the orchestrations in these fifty-year-old recordings.
