Ideally, this album from American Aoife O’Donovan might have been released on March 8th, International Women’s Day, as it revolves around the topic of the 1920 passing of the Nineteenth Amendment, which granted suffrage to women in the United States. The songs are all based on the writings and letters of a feminist activist of the time, suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt. Yet hardly two weeks have passed, and this slight delay out the gate by no means prevents All My Friends from taking off. In the United States, Aoife O’Donovan is a notable figure on the contemporary folk scene, as is confirmed by a substantial discography, Grammys, and prestigious collaborations.
Born to a well-off family of Irish origin, she studied music at the highest level, adhering to tradition and furthering it with her great knowledge of how things should be phrased and sung. On this new album, we hear the voice of one of queen Joni Mitchell’s disciples, a pure voice free of labels, folk or otherwise, which effortlessly clears the hurdles of even the most deceptively difficult melodies. We also discover an entirely new format for her songs, supported by airy orchestral arrangements and female choirs of endless grace. From the first chorus to the sumptuous grand finale, this album soars, showcasing the art behind Aoife O’Donovan’s storytelling. Turning to stories and musical arrangements from a bygone era, this album nevertheless imposes itself as one of the freshest and most avant-garde of the present day. It’s so beautiful that it feels like being in the dream world of Sufjan Stevens. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
