In a move to beat bootleggers to the punch, Pearl Jam decided to release each of their 2000 American concert performances in a series of inexpensive double-CD sets. The August 25th concert recorded in Jones Beach, NY, was the last of a three-night stay at that venue and it certainly seems as though they got into the correct groove. The slower songs seem heartfelt, and the high-energy songs crackle with raw power. Highlights include a furious rendition of "Whipping" supported by startling harmony vocals from guitarist Stone Gossard, and the uplifting "Given to Fly." The second set blasts off with a rapid-fire rendition of "Go" and drummer Matt Cameron's intricate drumwork on "In My Tree." The audience singalong "Betterman" is injected with a few choruses of "Save It for Later" by new wave pop stars the English Beat, which humorously follows the exact same chord structure. The band certainly isn't shy about demonstrating their influences, as is evidenced in the Neil Young-esque "Smile," their note-perfect cover of the Who's "Baba O'Riley," and even their Hendrix-toned ballad "Yellow Ledbetter" contains a snippet of Led Zeppelin's "Over the Hills and Far Away." The give and take that can only be possible in a live concert setting can often lead to disaster, but occasionally lends itself to truly magical moments. The last show in Jones Beach proves to be one of those nights where everything falls into place: The band feeds off of the crowd's energy, and the audience pays them back in full. One of the better shows in this series by far.
