Wouter Kellerman

Award-winning South African flutist, producer, composer, and philanthropist Wouter Kellerman emerged in the late 2000s with his global fusion sound, which merged classical instrumentation with contemporary flourish. After building a following in his home country through the years, he made his international breakthrough in the 2010s with Winds of Samsara, which won a Grammy for Best New Age Album in 2015. He continued on his much-lauded trajectory through the 2010s and into the 2020s, picking up multiple South African Music Awards for global/new age hits such as Love Language, Symphonic Soweto, In a Different Light, and Pangaea. Kellerman received another Grammy for 2022's collaborative single "Bayethe" with Nomcebo Zikode and Zakes Bantwini. Born in Johannesburg in 1961, Kellerman began playing the flute at age ten and went on to become one of South Africa's youngest recognized talents. Studying abroad, he learned to develop global sounds into his own improvisational style. In 2008 he released his debut, Colour, a collection of songs inspired by the sounds of Argentina, Ireland, Spain, and Africa, all performed on his trademark flute. Songs from that debut (along with a few from his 2010 sophomore follow-up, Two Voices) made their way onto 2012's Half Moon collection. Some fresh songs were included on 2012's Timeless, most notably a pair of tracks dedicated to Nelson Mandela and a sparse cover of the Game of Thrones theme. Mzansi, his 2013 release, included only two songs that didn't already appear on Two Voices. Together, these five releases established Kellerman as a popular world/roots musician, but it was not until his major breakthrough Samsara that his international recognition increased. A collaboration with American-born Indian artist Ricky Kej, the set also picked up multiple South African Music Awards for Best Instrumental Album, Best Producer of the Year, and Best International Achievement. He followed that success with the Grammy-nominated Love Language in 2015, topping the U.S. World Music chart upon release. A collaboration with the Soweto Gospel Choir, Symphonic Soweto: A Tribute to Nelson Mandela, landed in 2017, scoring a South African Music Award for Best Adult Contemporary Album the next year. Kellerman also teamed with the Ndlovu Youth Choir in 2018 for a cover of Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You," which went viral on social media and earned a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Independent Music Video. The track later wound up on 2019's In a Different Light, Kellerman's eighth album. He kicked off the 2020s with We've Known All Times, which was soon followed by Pangaea, a David Arkenstone collaboration that was nominated for Best New Age Album at the 64th Grammy Awards. However, it wasn't until 2022 that Kellerman picked up another Grammy, this time for Best Global Music Performance for "Bayethe," which also featured Nomcebo Zikode and Zakes Bantwini.
