Tokunbo

German and Nigerian jazz, pop and folk singer Tokunbo Akinro, also known by her first name Tokunbo, made her name with the group Tok Tok Tok before embarking on a solo career. Born of German and Nigerian parents, she grew up until the age of ten in Nigeria, then in Germany, where in 1998 she formed the trio Tok Tok Tok with Morten Klein and Frank Fiedler, later replaced by Olaf Casimir. Known outside German borders through concerts and festivals, Tok Tok Tok recorded a dozen studio albums and two live albums until its break-up in 2013, winning several awards including the Grand Prix de la Sacem in France (2005) and a nomination for the Critics' Prize in Germany. As lyricist and performer with the trio, Tokunbo Akinro produced her first solo album Queendome Come (2014), released by Socadisc under her own name. His penchant for blending jazz, pop and folk compositions is evident on subsequent productions The Swan (2018) and Golden Days (2022), released on the In-Akustik label and ranked No. 12 in the Jazz Echo chart. Alongside his career as an artist, Tokunbo Akinro teaches singing at the University of Hanover.
