Tavito Nanao
Alternative rock singer and songwriter Tavito Nanao was born in Japan on August 20, 1979. Growing up in a rural area of Japan, he listened to his father’s jazz music collection. When he was 13, he discovered other musical genres including alternative and rock. Inspired by the grunge movement, he began writing songs in late 1994 and by 1996, he had dropped out of high school and relocated to Tokyo. Within a year, he had already recorded a demo that got him signed to Sony Music. Tavito Nanao released his debut album, Ame ni Utaeba…! Disc 2, in 1999, a little more than six months before he made is live debut in early 2000. Moving over to an independent label, he issued the double album Heavenly Punk: Adagio (2002), which was followed by Hikagatar Monogatari Vol. 1: Humming Bird in 2003. Tavito Nanao’s fourth album, 911 Fantasia, was a musical about the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. 911 Fantasia was his first charting full-length release, climbing to Number 85 on the Japanese Albums chart. His career picked up steam and his subsequent albums climbed even higher on the chart including 2010’s Billion Voices (Number 41) and 2012’s Little Melody (Number 17). Tavito Nanao took a six-year break from recording before returning with the 2018 album Stray Dogs. In 2020, he composed the music for the Japanese TV drama series Arimura Kasumi no Satsukyu before returning with his eighth album, Long Voyage, in 2022.
