Mitch James
Following in the vein of influences Jack Johnson and Ben Harper, singer/songwriter Mitch James' acoustic pop focuses on personal lyrics, agile guitar playing, and a warm delivery. He made his self-titled debut via Sony in 2018.
In his mid-teens, the Auckland, New Zealand native would take a guitar into a practice room at his school and teach himself songs by playing along with music videos. James continued to work up his music skills, and at 17, saved up enough money for a ticket to London, England. Once there, he spent three years busking and playing small venues across Europe, sometimes sleeping on the street in order to stretch funds. James moved suddenly from that lifestyle to a major-label contract after someone at Sony Music NZ saw a music video he had posted on social media.
James' first recorded song, 2016's "No Fixed Abode," hit the viral charts, garnering millions of streams. His official debut single, "Move On," followed later in the year and received significant radio support in his home country. In 2017, he had another streaming success with "All the Ways to Say Goodbye" and was nominated for Best Pop Artist at the VNZMAs. The following March and April, James opened three stadium shows for Ed Sheeran in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Titled simply Mitch James, his first album was released in September of 2018. Recorded in Auckland with producer Simon Gooding and help from Jim Fraser and Eli Paewai of Dunedin band Six60, it debuted at number two on New Zealand's album chart.
