Mike Slott

A co-founder of the LuckyMe collective, Mike Slott produces several types of exploratory electronic music, from fractured hip-hop beats to shimmering, radiant ambient pieces. His early solo releases, such as 2009's Lucky 9Teen, and collaborations with Hudson Mohawke (as Heralds of Change) cross-pollinated the aesthetics of the U.K. bass and Los Angeles beat scenes, giving rise to the style referred to as "wonky" at the time. His subsequent work ventured into club music, electro-pop (as part of the duo Lesser Pieces), and cinematic soundscapes, as on 2020's Vignettes. Originally from Ireland, Mike Slott grew up with jazz and classical music, but beatmaking and electronic production soon became his primary modes of artistic expression. He formed Heralds of Change with Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke, and the duo released four EPs of off-kilter hip-hop on All City Records during 2006 and 2007, with guest vocalists including Oddisee and Olivier Day Soul. In July 2007, Slott and HudMo helped form the LuckyMe collective in Glasgow, operating as a label, club night, and design studio dedicated to promoting forward-thinking music and visuals. Slott earned recognition for his remixes for artists such as Nicole Willis & the Soul Investigators and Flying Lotus, and his distinctive beatmaking skills were displayed on two 7" singles released by All City in 2008, as well as a split with influential Michigan-based producer Dabrye, issued by Fat City in 2009. The same year brought Lucky 9Teen, his first LuckyMe release, as he relocated to New York and stepped up his international touring schedule. A 2011 single with Dutch visionary Martyn marked Slott's first venture into dance music. He released well-received remixes for artists like Bonobo and Kelpe, and formed the Los Angeles-based duo Lesser Pieces with Egyptian-American singer/songwriter Diane Badíè. Slott issued an ambient EP titled Mirror I Mirror in 2016, and sporadically released tracks (by himself and with Lesser Pieces) before returning to LuckyMe with the 2020 release Vignettes, his alternate soundtrack to Andrei Zvyagintsev's film The Return.
