MadeinTYO
An army brat who moved around a lot growing up, Malcolm Jamaal Davis took the name MadeinTYO when it was time to start rapping publicly, looking to his time spent living in Tokyo, Japan as inspiration for the twist on "Made in Tokyo." Taking notes from his brother 24hrs, who was also a producer who rapped, Davis started the Private Club collective in the mid-2010s and had a breakthrough with his "Uber Everywhere" single in 2016. He signed with Warner after the song gained viral traction and released several mixtapes before his 2018 debut album, Sincerely, Tokyo.
Davis was born in Hawaii in 1992 and moved around constantly, spending much of his teenage years in Tokyo and landing in Atlanta after high school. He first got inspired to rap and make his own beats from watching his cousin work on music in his room, as well as learning tricks of the trade from his older brother, rapper Rolls Royce Rizzy, later known as 24hrs. In 2015 he launched the Private Club hip-hop collective/label and released the "I Want" single, the first material under the MadeinTYO moniker.
He broke nationally the following year with "Uber Everywhere," the stand-out track from his brief debut mixtape You Are Forgiven. The song was streamed hundreds of millions of times, enough to be picked up for major distribution on Warner, and subsequently peaked that July at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100. His next single, "Skateboard P," featured Big Sean and was a platinum hit as well. Thank You, Mr. Tokyo, another short mixtape, was out at the end of the year. Davis followed with a pair of EP releases: first, a collaborative effort with big brother 24hrs called 24Hrs in Tokyo, and second, True's World, which arrived in the summer of 2017. His first studio album, Sincerely, Tokyo, arrived in October 2018, and featured cameos from A$AP Ferg, Blood Orange, and others. The next year, Ferg repaid Davis with "WAM" from Floor Seats. Davis also joined Key Glock and Tay-Money for "Stop Calling." 2020 brought additional collaborations including another with Ferg, "Square Bitch," along with the star-studded full-length Never Forgotten, which featured J Balvin, Ty Dolla $ign, Tori y Moi, Wiz Khalifa, and Chance the Rapper, among others.
