Luca Brasi
Tasmanian four-piece Luca Brasi play the kind of melodic punk and alternative rock that has been at the forefront of the Australian underground scene for decades -- from the nervous, spiky punk of their 2011 debut to the heart-on-sleeve alt rock of 2018's ARIA-charting Stay.
Formed in the small town of Scamander, Tasmania at the tail-end 2009 by Tyler Richardson (lead vocals, bass), Thomas Busby (guitar), Mitchell Dobson (guitar), and Saxon Hall (drums), and named after the character from Mario Puzo's The Godfather, the group delivered their debut demo, Sleeps with the Fishes, the following year. Taking inspiration from the likes of Hot Water Music, Screamfeeder, Polar Bear Club, and Small Brown Bike, the group's post-hardcore and emo-influenced sound caught the ear of Melbourne's Poison City Records, which released the band's debut album, 2011's Extended Family. With Patrick Marshall joining the band on guitar a few months later to flesh out their sound, the group headed out on tour the following year across Australia -- they also toured with Heroes for Hire, and released the "Tassie" single. By the end of 2013, Dobson and Hall had left the band, and Danny Flood stepped in on drums and the group became a quartet again.
In 2014, the band released their sophomore album, By a Thread, again on Poison City. With the group gaining a larger audience through radio play and online exposure, dates in Europe and Asia followed. 2015 saw the release of the Loose Threads EP, which collected tracks that didn’t make it onto their second album, and once again saw them tour Australia, with the U.K.'s Gnarwolves and fellow Aussie's Tired Lion. Luca Brasi's third album, If This Is All We're Going to Be, was issued in 2016 and became their first to enter the ARIA charts. Recorded with Jimmy Balderston and Brian McTernan (Converge, Hot Water Music), the album saw the band shifting their sound slightly, opting for a heavier, more melodic effect than that of their earlier spiky, raw punk. The following year they returned to the studio with Balderston to start recording their fourth album, and tapped Kisschasy's Darren Cordeaux -- who the band had previously toured with -- for input and mixing. 2018's Stay saw their sound develop further, with their heart-on-sleeve lyrics and mature alt-punk earning them plaudits -- the album entered the ARIA Top Ten upon release.
