Kebyart

The saxophone quartet Kebyart has expanded the saxophone quartet repertory through new commissions, arrangements, and a generally creative approach. The group has gained followers across Europe and records for the Linn label. Kebyart was formed in 2014 in Barcelona, Spain. Its membership, which has remained constant, consists of soprano saxophonist Pere Méndez, alto saxophonist Victor Serra, tenor saxophonist Robert Seara, and baritone saxophonist Daniel Miguel. The name Kebyart is an adaptation of that of the Balinese gamelan Gong Kebyar ensemble; "kebyar" means "to flare up or burst open," referring to the sharp contrasts cultivated by the group and also to a sudden realization of group cohesion. Kebyart has received instruction from various leading chamber players, including members of the Cuarteto Casals and the Cuarteto Quiroga, violinist Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartett, and the late violist Hatto Beyerle, among others. From the beginning, the group took what its members describe as a creative and open approach to the saxophone quartet repertory, performing original literature, making a commitment to newly composed music, and making its own arrangements of music from a wide variety of stylistic sources. Kebyart appeared on the album Dreamlover: Music for Saxophone by Albena Petrovic in 2022. Kebyart began to break through to international audiences when the members were named ECHO Rising Stars for the 2021-2022 season. That brought appearances at such major non-Spanish venues as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Vienna Musikverein. Kebyart has won several major European chamber music awards, including the International Franz Cibulka Competition in Austria and the Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music Competition. The group has collaborated with various artists, such as pianist Dénes Várjon, countertenor Xavier Sabata, and composer Albert Guinovart, with whom Kebyart has performed live. Signed to the Linn label, Kebyart released the album Lectures différentes, featuring music by Stravinsky, Haydn, Peter Eötvös, Joan Pérez-Villegas, and Leonard Cohen, in 2022. Kebyart returned in 2023 with the album Traum der Jugend.
