As December Falls
Combining pop-punk and emo stylings, As December Falls are a bold and energetic, D.I.Y. act from Nottingham, England, formed in 2014. After eschewing multiple record label advances, the band broke into the U.K. album chart of their own accord with a third album -- 2023's Join the Club -- nine full years after their formation.
Initially comprising vocalist Bethany Curtis, Ande Hunter on lead guitar and backing vocals, bassist Timmy Francis, Lukas James on drums, and Will Brown on rhythm guitar, each member had been playing music since their early teens. As a result, As December Falls' debut EP -- A Home Inside Your Head -- appeared within months of their formation, and the band proceeded to fulfil local live engagements. A March 2015 single, "Capture," anticipated the following year's relationship-themed When You Figure Out You're Wrong, Get Back to Me EP, a release promoted by dates in Manchester and London. January 2017's "More to You" crystallized their approach to melodic, hook-filled pop-punk and led to another London date, this time supporting Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction. The singles "Touch" and "Keep Dreaming" followed before they closed the year with the digital-only Live at Rescue Rooms.
As December Falls issued a run of singles in 2018 which would ultimately appear on their February 2019 eponymous debut album. Produced by Arthur Walwin, it was recorded on a small budget in his mother's south-east London garage, maintaining the band's steady, self-funded rise. Later the same year, they issued a cover of Tommy James & the Shondells' "I Think We're Alone Now," directly and suitably inspired by Tiffany's chart-topping 1987 version. Between the release of As December Falls and its follow-up -- August 2021's Happier. -- Curtis and Hunter married, while Brown left the band. Using revenue from gigs and debut album sales, they were able to craft a more polished sound on Happier. by drafting in John Mitchell to produce the sessions. With time, skills learnt by Hunter in his digital marketing career helped raise their profile.
2022 saw As December Falls pick up the pace commercially, helped in part by that October's single "Mayday," one of their heaviest pieces to date. Symbolic of their widening appeal, its release coincided with a series of shows in Germany and Italy before December brought a tour supporting Bowling for Soup. In June 2023, they made their Download Festival debut, filling the tent in which they performed. The following month saw the release of Join the Club, which hit number 11 on the U.K. album chart and was titled in reference to the high level of fan engagement that went into its creation. Although James appeared on the album, he'd left by the time of its release, and they chose to continue as a three-piece.
