Renaud, icône de la chanson populaire française, a grandi à Paris, unfluencé musicalement et politiquement par sa mère, fille de mineurs du Nord bercée par la chanson populaire, et son père, romancier et amateur de classique. Très vite, il délaisse ses études au profit de l'anarchisme, joue un peu la comédie, presque par hasard (grâce à sa ressemblance avec un acteur à remplacer) et commence à chanter dans les rues avec un ami dans l'espoir d'y gagner un peu. C'est alors que le producteur de Coluche le remarque : le jeune Renaud est ainsi amené à chanter ses compositions sur la scène du « Caf'conc' ». Cette expérience est l'occasion pour lui d'attirer l'attention d'une autre productrice grâce à qui il enregistre en 1975 son premier album : Amoureux de Paname. Le 33-tours obtient un petit succès mais pas de triomphe puisqu'il comprend la chanson Hexagone, trop provocatrice pour faire l'unanimité. Pour l'opus suivant, Laisse Béton, il abandonne son image de titi parisien au profit d'un blouson en cuir. Plus soigné, cet album connaît des ventes honorables mais surtout comportent un morceau destiné à devenir un tube : la chanson-titre. Ce sont finalement quelques festivals comme le Printemps de Bourges, dont il foule la scène pour la première fois en 1978, qui le font connaître d'un public plus large, et les années 80 s'avèrent très glorieuses pour la carrière de Renaud, qui dévoile un grand coeur grâce à des chansons comme Peau Aime qui adoucissent son image de loubard. Certaines de ses compositions sont cependant interdites d'antenne comme C'est mon dernier bal, Renaud ne renonçant jamais à son image de « chanteur énervant ». Ce n'est qu'en 1983 avec Morgane de toi que Renaud montre l'étendue de sa sensibilité, créant un personnage oxymoresque au charisme indéniable. Par la suite, la consécration est opérée par Mistral gagnant ou Marchand de cailloux, qui côtoient des reprises de Brassens. Après quelques rôles au cinéma, notamment dans Germinal de Claude Berri, les années 90 correspondent à une traversée du désert marquée par la dépression. La renaissance a lieu en 2002, incarnée par l'album Boucan d'enfer. Renaud n'hésite alors plus à revenir sur lui-même, à publier des livres.
