Eyedress
As Eyedress, Filipino singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Idris Vicuña makes woozy lo-fi music that calls on a wide range of styles and reference points. Over a series of albums and mixtape releases, Eyedress dipped into warped R&B, synth pop, and guitar-centered indie fare, balancing lightheartedness with mystery on records like 2020's Let's Skip to the Wedding and its follow-ups, Mulholland Drive (2021) and Full Time Lover (2022). After signing with RCA, he remained a prolific singles artist with tracks like "Flowers and Chocolate" and the Mac DeMarco collaboration "The Dark Prince." The lengthy and highly collaborative mixtape Vampire in Beverly Hills appeared in 2024.
Vicuña was born in Quezon City, Metro Manila, in 1990. At the age of five, he relocated with his family to the United States and was raised in Arizona before moving to California. He discovered music in his early teens, playing bass in a Crass-influenced crust punk band. In 2005, Vicuña moved back to Manila, where he formed Bee Eyes with his friend and fellow film student Julius Valledor. The band was named for the mother of one of their friends, who accused them of being "B.I.'s" (a Filipino colloquialism for "bad influences") on her son. Bee Eyes released a couple of EPs, for which they made their own music videos, and became minor Internet celebrities after a cease-and-desist order from Sub Pop, whose logo they had copied for one of their T-shirts.
Vicuña learned from Valledor how to program hip-hop beats, and in his downtime from Bee Eyes he started work on the solo project that would eventually become Eyedress, influenced by the likes of J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Frank Ocean, and Odd Future. A few digitally released tracks stirred up buzz and got him opening slots for Grimes and How to Dress Well on their Manila tour stops. The debut Eyedress EP, Supernatural, was released in 2013. Recorded entirely on his father's laptop using free software, the EP featured Vicuña's androgynous, high-pitched vocals and a woozy, narcotic sound not dissimilar to the "witch house" trend of a couple of years previous. It was well received, and its lead track, "Nature Trips," became an Internet sensation with its chilling, low-budget video directed by Valledor.
A full-length debut, Shapeshifter, followed in late 2015 on U.K. label Headcount Records, and featured a guest appearance from King Krule recording as Edgar the Breathtaker. Eyedress continued to evolve with his second long-player, 2017's Manila Ice, led by the peculiar and dreamy single "Sofia Coppola." He left Manila in 2018 and returned to the United States, landing in L.A. to focus on music. The next two years brought the mixtapes Sensitive G and Dark Web DMT, the latter a collaboration with Lil DMT. In 2020, Eyedress released Let's Skip to the Wedding, a more sentimental and lovelorn reading of his faded sounds. Another full-length, Mulholland Drive, appeared a year later and included the viral hit "Something About You." Eyedress followed up on that success in 2022 with the ambitious Full Time Lover, which combined elements of hip-hop, post-punk, and shoegaze.
Eyedress signed a deal with RCA Records in early 2023 and continued to issue singles like "Flowers & Chocolate" and "Escape from the Killer 2008," as well as collaborations with Mac DeMarco and the Marías. His next project was the massive 34-track mixtape Vampire in Beverly Hills. Released in April 2024, it featured numerous guests including John Maus, Wild Nothing, Rico Nasty, and many more.
