The 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd in 1623 has properly been attended by a flood of new albums of his music. This one has succeeded in standing out from the crowd, making classical best-seller charts in the summer of 2023. The clean consort work from the Chelys Consort of Viols and the melodious, perfectly chamber-proportioned singing of Helen Charlston might have done the trick by themselves, but the musicians have something more to offer. As they put it, they are interested in "not just the music, but also the man behind it." Thus they lean toward works illustrative of Byrd's attitudes and experiences. This results in a cohesive program with some unusual pieces. The group touches on Byrd's close relationship with Queen Elizabeth (O, Lord, make thy servant, Elizabeth) and his veneration of his predecessor, Tallis (Ye sacred muses), and it has a fine way with Byrd's somewhat unusual philosophical pieces like Why do I use my paper, ink and pen. Charlston is alert to the zingers of dissonance that bring out text details, and the consort pieces are also very strong, balancing contrapuntal lines against unorthodox local harmonies. BIS' church sound is not ideal for this chamber music, but it doesn't seriously distort what the performers have achieved here. A highlight of the Byrd Year.
