Supposé être le dernier album de Jay, The Black Album tire son nom des albums atypiques des Beatles (The White Album dit Double blanc) et de Prince (The Black Album). Il brouille allègrement les pistes, prétendant dans les premiers interviewes que l’album serait un retour à son premier, sans singles, puis change son fusil d’épaule lors de la sortie des deux premiers « Change Clothes » avec Pharrell Williams et « Dirt Off Your Shoulder », aux thèmes moins urbains que prévus.
La mère de Jay-Z introduit l’album avec « December 4th », date de naissance du rappeur, et y évoque son enfance. Rick Rubin contribue avec un son rock cross-over dont il a le secret pour « 99 Problems », rappelant des temps plus anciens dans le rap. Jay fait également preuve de sincérité sur « Moment of Clarity » dans lequel il s’explique sur les accusations d’avoir dilué son message pour multiplier les oreilles touchées. Ou sur « What More Can I Say » où il précise qu’il ne copie pas mais s’inspire des textes des autres pour leur rendre hommage.
