Noyé dans l’alcool, l’acide, et leurs effets aussi conjoints que dévastateurs, le chanteur Fish est le moteur, aussi nombriliste qu’énergique, de ce troisième album studio, plus grand succès commercial de Marillion.

Album conceptuel, Misplaced Childhood, portrait de l’enfant en soldat en uniforme à brandebourgs, évoque en effet les troubles d’une enfance ravagée, la désolation de la perte d’un amour, la difficulté à gérer un succès trop brutal (dans tous les sens du terme), et les névroses qui accompagnent ces désordres. Quelques références à l’Écosse vont jusqu’à rappeler les origines du chanteur.

Le groupe, impérial, fait imploser les réserves critiques quant à sa faculté d’initier une nouvelle école viable du rock progressiste britannique, non seulement par le souffle qui sous-tend des pièces d’un constant lyrisme, mais également par son habileté à trousser quelques singles (exercice dans lequel on n’attendait pas ces esthètes), particulièrement efficaces. Gageons que la production, confié à Chris Kimsey (à la console pour l’album Sticky Fingers des Rolling Stones, et qui sait donc ce qu’un passage en radio signifie), y soit pour beaucoup.

Misplaced Childhood, certifié disque de platine, atteindra le sommet des charts britanniques (et la quarante-septième position des classements américains), et le single « Kayleigh » (portrait d’une ancienne fiancée, dédaigneuse de Fish), parviendra à la deuxième place de sa catégorie. L’édition remastérisée de 1998 offrira dix-sept (sic) morceaux supplémentaires au programme initial.

Chronique

Noyé dans l’alcool, l’acide, et leurs effets aussi conjoints que dévastateurs, le chanteur Fish est le moteur, aussi nombriliste qu’énergique, de ce troisième album studio, plus grand succès commercial de Marillion.

Album conceptuel, Misplaced Childhood, portrait de l’enfant en soldat en uniforme à brandebourgs, évoque en effet les troubles d’une enfance ravagée, la désolation de la perte d’un amour, la difficulté à gérer un succès trop brutal (dans tous les sens du terme), et les névroses qui accompagnent ces désordres. Quelques références à l’Écosse vont jusqu’à rappeler les origines du chanteur.

Le groupe, impérial, fait imploser les réserves critiques quant à sa faculté d’initier une nouvelle école viable du rock progressiste britannique, non seulement par le souffle qui sous-tend des pièces d’un constant lyrisme, mais également par son habileté à trousser quelques singles (exercice dans lequel on n’attendait pas ces esthètes), particulièrement efficaces. Gageons que la production, confié à Chris Kimsey (à la console pour l’album Sticky Fingers des Rolling Stones, et qui sait donc ce qu’un passage en radio signifie), y soit pour beaucoup.

Misplaced Childhood, certifié disque de platine, atteindra le sommet des charts britanniques (et la quarante-septième position des classements américains), et le single « Kayleigh » (portrait d’une ancienne fiancée, dédaigneuse de Fish), parviendra à la deuxième place de sa catégorie. L’édition remastérisée de 1998 offrira dix-sept (sic) morceaux supplémentaires au programme initial.
