Le succès de Kissing to Be Clever, premier album de Culture Club, n’a pas été immédiat : les deux premiers singles (« White Boy » et « I’m Afraid of Me ») n’atteignent que la 114e et 100e place du classement britannique. Leur succès ne vient qu’avec le troisième extrait : « Do You Really Want to Hurt me ? » fait en effet un énorme carton. Il se vend à 6,5 millions d’exemplaires et se place n°1 dans plusieurs pays. Ce titre développe un métissage de pop et de rythmes reggae.
Le single suivant, « Time (Clock of The Heart) », se place lui aussi au sommet des classements de nombreux pays (n°2 aux Etats-Unis et n°3 en Grande-Bretagne). Alors que le titre « Mystery Boy » est uniquement disponible dans l’édition japonaise, « I'll Tumble 4 Ya » est, quant à lui, édité aux Etats-Unis et au Canada où il se place dans le Top 10.
Kissing to Be Clever s’écoule à quelque 5 millions d’exemplaires (dont 2 millions aux Etats-Unis). Culture Club est connu à travers le monde : le look excentrique de Boy George et la musique qui navigue entre la new wave, la pop et le reggae font fureur.
