Fondé à Heidelberg, en Allemagne, en 1997 par Pit Baumgartner, collectionneur érudit de samples venus de tous horizons et habile architecte sonore, le groupe De-Phazz (DEstination PHutureJazz) n’est peut-être pas allé au bout de son programme censé propulser le jazz dans le futur mais s’est imposé avec maestria comme l’une des acteurs majeurs et les plus durablement créatifs dans le champ aussi vaste que varié de ce sous-genre festif et classieux qu’il a en grande partie contribué à façonner : la lounge music. Pour fêter en beauté son 25e anniversaire, De-Phazz publie avec Jelly Banquet son 17e album studio, proposant en 23 plages kaléidoscopiques un tour d’horizon quasi exhaustif de ses territoires et toute l’étendue de son savoir-faire dans l’art de mélanger les sons et marier les humeurs. A la fois très diversifiées dans le choix et l’équilibre de leurs ingrédients et dans le même temps constamment tenues dans des cadres formels immuables assurant à l’ensemble son unité (et à l’auditeur le confort ouaté d’un univers sonore accueillant dans lequel se laisser aller sans risque d’être dérangé…), ces chansons, portées par les voix de vieilles connaissances du groupe (Pat Appleton, Karl Frierson, Barbara Lahr, Sandie Wollasch) mais également de nouveaux venus plus surprenants (comme Carol Schule, l'icône du blues rock Inga Rumpf ou encore David Thomas, membre fondateur du groupe rock d’avant-garde Père Ubu), déclinent toutes les séductions de leurs cocktails exotiques mêlant sur des grooves électro alanguis mâtinés de pulsations latines subliminales, sonorités nu soul, pop légère et ethno-jazz… Une “recette maison” mille fois imitée mais dont De-Phazz conserve indubitablement le secret d’origine. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
