Pour beaucoup, ce deuxième album de Public Enemy est le plus grand disque de l’histoire du rap. Et lorsqu’il débarque dans les bacs des disquaires en 1988, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back consacre la bande de Chuck D comme les Rolling Stones du hip hop. Véritable uppercut qui chamboula l'histoire du genre, Public Enemy demeure grâce à ce disque LA référence en matière d'engagement idéologique ET musical. Offrant une version black et sans langue de bois de CNN, auscultant chaque recoin de la société américaine à coup de rimes (très) riches et de millefeuilles de samples lettrés et souvent carnassiers, PE impose ses mots mais aussi ses sons. Une approche agressive de la production (la Bomb Squad pilotée par le producteur Hank Schocklee) qui fait des miracles sonores. Un tsunami électrique et groovy, à des années lumières du rap bling bling qui prendra le contrôle d’un genre musical qui vit alors, en 1988, son âge d’or créatif. Cette Deluxe Edition comprend un second disque de treize bonus incluant notamment la version No Noise de Bring The Noise, des instrus de Rebel Without a Pause, Night Of The Living Baseheads et Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos et la version B.O. du titre Fight The Power du film éponyme de Spike Lee. © MZ/Qobuz
