Il fut un temps où Mahalia était promise à un bel avenir dans une soul intime et moderne, notamment grâce au succès de son titre Sober paru en 2017. De l’eau a coulé sous les ponts, et heureusement que l’Anglaise est capable de dérouter et de dévier des chemins tout tracés. Son troisième album, IRL, est toujours introspectif, c’est vrai, mais fondu dans un R&B bien plus prononcé, qui efface vite les guitares acoustiques mobilisées sur le titre d’introduction, Ready. Ensuite, les synthétiseurs et les chants décidés prennent le relais, au milieu des rythmiques discrètement tirées du rap sudiste. Elle est une chanteuse de son temps, en rien bloquée dans la notoriété de ses débuts. Voici donc un album doux, confortable, brillamment emmené par le single Terms and Conditions, et peuplé de curiosité déterrées des années 2000 comme Isn’t It Strange ? ou le rythmé Goodbyes.
