Toronto est-elle une ville assez grande pour que deux rappeurs, en l’occurrence Drake et Tory Lanez, puissent cohabiter ? Rien n'est moins sûr au vu de la rivalité qui s’est d’emblée installée entre ces deux-là. Tory Lanez n’a pas d’autre ambition que de devenir « le plus grand artiste du monde » et, pour ce faire, n’hésite pas à raconter sa vie entre chaque chanson de ce premier album oscillant entre trap et R&B. Le principe peut séduire mais il casse singulièrement le rythme d’I Told You, au demeurant pas inintéressant musicalement, même s’il faut reconnaître que Tory Lanez est parfois difficile à suivre.
Quelques bons titres surnagent, tel « Flex », non sans rappeler toutefois, et parfois de très près, Trey Songz ou Fetty Wap, mais aussi « Cold Hard Love », « Loners Blvd » ou encore « Say It ». L’utilisation de samples est d’ailleurs au cœur de ce premier album, ce qui fera souligner aux détracteurs de Tory Lanez son manque d’originalité : les oreilles averties repéreront ainsi des extraits de titres de XXYYXX, Frank Dukes, Raleigh Ritchie, Brownstone, Tanto Metro and Devonte ou encore Wayne Wonder.
Mais si le manque d’identité musicale est un reproche logique au vu du jeune âge de l’artiste, qui n’a que 23 ans, c’est aussi qu’il est renforcé par la trajectoire opaque de Tory Lanez, qui a sorti une dizaine de mixtapes aux orientations musicales plurielles avant de se risquer à ce recueil.
Son talent et son potentiel ne sont pourtant pas contestables, mais lorsque déboule sur la fin du disque un morceau comme « Luv », bardé d’intentions presque pop, la différence est tellement flagrante avec les chansons précédentes, elles-mêmes très différentes entre elles, que l’auditeur ne peut que constater une direction artistique trop aléatoire, manquant d’un certain réalisme et souffrant de trop de tâtonnements. C’est en approfondissant ce dernier aspect que Tory Lanez prouvera sa valeur sur la longueur.
