Shortly after Planet E compiled and released Faces & Phases (1997), a valuable collection of Kevin Saunderson's seminal productions under a number of guises, the top-shelf Detroit label compiled yet another collection, Heavenly, this one comprised exclusively of the producer's E-Dancer tracks. Saunderson released some of his best work ever as E-Dancer: in turns moody and explosive tracks like "Velocity Funk," "The Human Bond," "Heavenly," "Pump the Move," and "World of Deep," all of which are compiled here alongside numerous others. Furthermore, there are a number of remixes by such Detroit legends as Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, and Juan Atkins. The resulting collection is a fascinating glimpse into the soundworld of vintage Detroit techno as defined by Saunderson and a few of his likewise gifted peers. While it's nowhere near as definitive and historic as Faces & Phases, Heavenly is a bit more cohesive, much more thoroughly listenable, and likewise recommended, making it a good secondary pickup for fans of this style of techno.
