American fans of British folk music will recognize singer Kathryn Roberts from her recent duo album with Kate Rusby; those who are seriously into the British scene may recognize guitarist Sean and violinist Seth Lakeman as the core of the Lakeman Brothers band. As Equation (with drummer Iain Goodall and bassist Darren Edwards), this ensemble makes very attractive folk-pop. They may not be breaking any new musical ground here, but the group's casual virtuosity and beautifully constructed songs are a joy to hear. Roberts' shimmery voice is the centerpiece of Equation's sound; she's equally at home rocking out modestly (as on "Kissing Crime" and "Strange Love") and crooning softly ("Sad the Girl," "Safe and Sound"). But the jangly guitar pop settings and intimate acoustics are an equally important part of what makes this such a winning debut. Highly recommended.
