La bande à Jagger est de retour sept ans après son dernier album, Blue & Lonesome, un disque de reprises de blues en 2016. Entre-temps, il y a eu le Covid et la mort de leur batteur historique Charlie Watts. Les Stones ont repris la route pour célébrer leurs 60 ans de carrière en 2022, avec Steve Jordan, adoubé par Watts, derrière les fûts, puis se sont enfermés avec Andrew Watt, producteur de Pearl Jam, Iggy Pop, Justin Bieber ou Miley Cyrus. Bonus : le New-Yorkais de 32 ans est un énorme fan des Stones, au point qu’il porte à chaque fois un t-shirt différent du groupe. Et avec lui, les Anglais ont retrouvé leur touche du début des 70’s. Si la production est moderne, l’inspiration est vintage avec la ballade blues Dream Skies, façon Exile on Main St., ou Mess It Up, (l’un des deux derniers titres de Charlie Watts, remplacé par Steve Jordan) sur lequel Jagger retrouve cette façon de faire glisser ses refrains tout en retenue sur la descente du riff de guitare. Sans compter Live by the Sword, un titre bien bluesy 70’s, ou Bite My Head Off, un gros rock toutes guitares dehors avec un riff signature. Et puis ce dernier titre déjà culte, avec Keith Richards et Mick Jagger, guitare sèche et harmonica, qui reprennent pour la première fois Rolling Stone, la fameuse chanson de Muddy Waters qui a inspiré le nom du groupe.
