Moreira da Silva is an important singer/composer in the best tradition of Carioca malandros (smart people surrounded by an extensive folklore, in which elegance had a prominent role). Not only he was the developer of the so-called samba-de-breque style (he used to take advantage of the rhythmic breaks where he would insert lyrics, extending the improvisations more and more to the point of reaching one minute or so), but he was also a competent singer on his own; his interpretations were a faithful register of the true bohemian Carioca spirit in perfect diction. Also, his compositions chronicled Rio's urban life frame by frame (hence the title of this album). The lyrics' omnipresent humor may be lost for non-Lusophonic audiences, but the music stands for itself, where listeners can appreciate typical orquestras de gafieira (Brazilian version of the American big bands). This compilation brings some of his most representative hits as well as other composers' classics -- such as Noel Rosa's "Conversa de Botequim" and Billy Blanco's "Piston de Gafieira" -- all recorded between 1958 and 1965.
