À raison d'un album par an depuis huit ans, Portugal. The Man est resté longtemps l'apanage d'une poignée d'amateurs de rock indépendant avant d'attirer un public plus large après la signature avec Atlantic Records pour l'album précédent, In the Mountain In the Cloud, sans doute la plus grande réussite du groupe à ce jour. Pourtant, cela n'a pas suffi à retenir le claviériste et le batteur, remplacés à leur poste respectif par Kyle O'Quin et Kane Ritchotte.
Non content de pallier à ces départs, les fondateurs John Gourley et Zack Carothers se sont mis en quête d'un nouveau producteur capable de transformer le capital de sympathie du groupe et son succès d'estime en reconnaissance notable et, pourquoi pas, en vague de fond médiatique. Le styliste Brian Burton alias Danger Mouse dont le palmarès aligne quelques best-sellers de Gorillaz à The Black Keys en passant par Gnarls Barkley, était l'homme de la situation.
Le problème d'Evil Friends n'est pas tant son identité définie entre rock psychédélique, pop aérienne, touche electro moderne et esprit libertaire que l'absence de mélodies véritablement accrocheuses comme ce fut le cas depuis trois albums. Avant de faire appel au producteur porte-bonheur, le groupe a paraît-il sacrifié deux semaines de boulot et huit chansons afin de repartir sur de nouvelles bases. À l'instar du groove synthétique et minimaliste de « Plastic Soldiers » et « Evil Friends », tous deux marqués par des faux départs et déviations, l'album manque un peu d'âme malgré les greffes opérées sur « Creep in a T-Shirt » (piano bancal, voix filtrées, trompettes synthétiques) et « Modern Jesus » au clavier maigrelet entêtant.
Plus hardcore et fourbis de guitares, « Hip-Hop Kids » et « Atomic Man » redressent la barre avant la pause ballade de « Sea of Air ». Une autre facette de Portugal. The Man entre alors en scène avec « Waves » et le gospel electro « Holy Roller (Hallelujah) ». Cette suite plus construite se termine par le foisonnant « Purple Yellow Red and Blue » et le planant « Smile ». Si la patte du producteur est très présente, il n'en reste pas moins que le groupe ressort grandi de cette expérience sans livrer le meilleur de lui-même.
