Avant de quitter ce bas-monde le 28 février 2012, Daniel Darc travaillait à un album qu'il n'aura pas eu le temps d'achever mais dont il avait déjà posé les voix. Son guitariste et arrangeur Laurent Marimbert a alors terminé le travail afin de dévoiler publiquement ce qui restera comme le testament musical de l'artiste.
Judicieusement intitulé Chapelle Sixteen, l'opus terminal met tout de suite dans l'ambiance avec « Les 3 singes », ouvert sur des choeurs angéliques. Le titre, guidé par une diction martiale, se fourvoie ensuite dans un arrangement symphonique de pacotille. La question de savoir si DD aurait approuvé le morceau tel quel se pose légitimement. Le rock pur et dur reprend ses droits avec le juvénile « Une place au paradis », prémonitoire, suivi d'un « Sweet Sxiteen » aux guitares brûlantes.
Sur les quinze titres de la première partie, la plupart sont reliés aux thèmes de prédilection du chanteur, à savoir la religion et la mort. Un fort parfum de morbidité rôde donc a posteriori sur les chansons alternant élucubrations jazz (« Un peu de sang »), ballades à fleur de peau (« La Dernière fois », « Période bleue ») et variations saisies sur le vif (au nombre de quatre). Murmuré sur fond d'orgue, « Que sont devenus les hommes » débute comme une confidence touchante avant de s'épanouir en un déluge de flûte, de rythme et de guitare. « Des idiots comme moi » fait sonner « idots » comme « idéaux ».
La deuxième partie, constituée de maquettes, propose une suite de ballades touchantes laissées sur l'établi avant de partir rejoindre quelques connaissances. Se détachent notamment le poétique « Quand la ville dort » et « C'est quoi l'amour ». S'il ne peut empêcher une certaine sensation de voyeurisme, l'ensemble reflète fidèlement les visions et les fulgurances d'un artiste qui, de son vivant, évoluait déjà dans une autre planète.
