Robert Spano's performance of Brahms' German Requiem with the Atlanta Symphony & Chorus deserves to take a place among the finest recorded versions of the piece. In spite of the size of the chorus of 200 (very capably prepared by Norman Mackenzie), Spano manages to maintain a texture that's clean and transparent even at the moments where the music is at its fullest. The sheer size of the chorus allows the singers to continue singing lightly even when Brahms calls for the most strength and volume, so the purity of tone is never distorted by having to force the volume. The level of quiet Spano is able to achieve at the opening of the first movement is remarkable; the chorus slips in almost unnoticed under the orchestra, and the moment has an aura of unearthly serenity. The chorus' restraint makes it possible for Spano to treat the orchestra with comparable lightness when the music requires it; there are sections where the orchestra plays with the delicacy and linear clarity of chamber music. When the music calls for all the stops to be pulled out, as in the sixth movement, though, the sound is appropriately full. Spano's reading, besides being exceptionally clean, is dramatic and expansive. Only the fourth movement, "Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen," seems a little rushed, when it needs to unfold more broadly. Soprano Twyla Robinson and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien are more than adequate, but they don't have the large, warm voices that the soloists on some of the classic recordings, such as Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau on the Klemperer set, bring to this piece. Telarc's sound is characteristically excellent, capturing the smallest details and creating a strong sense of presence.
