Most of the tracks selected for 2013's Ballads appeared on 2005's Love Songs. This set essentially replaces the earlier one. It goes deeper with Gill's '90s Motown ballads than any of the standard anthologies, drawing from his self-titled 1990 masterpiece (a whopping five tracks), 1993's Provocative (two), and 1996's Let's Get the Mood Right (four), and it also makes a smart move by plucking "I'm Still Waiting" from the New Jack City soundtrack. One supreme cut that's unfortunately missing is "There U Go," from the Boomerang soundtrack. That song can be found on two of those non-thematic compilations: 1997's Favorites and 2002's Ultimate Collection.
