Michael Ball et Alfie Boe ont partagé l’affiche de la comédie musicale Les Misérables sur laquelle ils ont noué une véritable complicité artistique. Celle-ci s’est alors matérialisée par deux albums communs, Together et Together Again sortis respectivement en 2016 et 2017. Et si le prolifique Michael Ball s’est aussi acquitté d’un nouvel opus en solo, baptisé Coming Home to You (2019), les deux hommes n’ont pas voulu laisser passer l'occasion de se retrouver pour un nouveau chapitre discographique annonçant une tournée commune en 2020.
Si Back Together n’a pas forcément nécessité des heures de réflexion pour se voir affublé d’un titre aussi peu original, force est de constater que Michael Ball et Alfie Boe ne boudent jamais leur plaisir de chanter ensemble. D’entrée, le quelque peu grandiloquent « The Greatest Show » donne le ton : entre des cordes bien senties, une section rythmique joueuse et des chœurs féminins omniprésents, les deux chanteurs à la voix puissante marquent leur territoire dans un paysage sonore plus proche de la variété internationale que de l’opéra. Les deux titres suivants, « Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again » et « Sunrise, Sunset » se révèlent beaucoup plus posés, reposant essentiellement sur des cordes majestueuses et les voix complémentaires des deux chanteurs.
Les reprises, au cœur de cet effort discographique, sont toujours traitées avec les meilleurs égards. Qu’il s’agisse du « Circle of Life » échappé du Roi Lion, d’un medley de Queen symphonique très émouvant quoiqu’assez prévisible, d’un « My Way » qui voit les deux hommes se livrer à une guerre du vibrato sans merci ou encore du conclusif « Brothers in Arms » emprunté à Dire Straits, tout reste dans le bon goût et la bonne intention. Back Together est donc dans l’ensemble un nouveau chapitre fort honorable des aventures de « Michael et Alfie », magnifié par des orchestrations de très haute tenue.
