Michael East (1580?-1648) was a follower of Thomas Morley and, like Morley, a publisher. His music is performed rarely, at least outside early music circles, but hearing this lovely release, it's hard to understand how overlooked it has been. Both the viol consort pieces and the vocal works are simple and somber in the best English tradition. These performances by the Chelys Consort of Viols and the Fieri Consort have smoothness and emotional weight, although BIS' church sound is not quite right; viol consort music was a genre of courts and aristocratic estates. The best thing here is the program, which is neither a strictly historical one nor a modern anthology of the repertory. Instead, the performers extrapolate from the genres in East's music to create a sequence of pieces that draws on his music's ideas and emotions. There is a group of Fantasies for viol consort, each, unusually, with a Latin title, and these are interspersed with vocal verse anthems and madrigals, accompanied by the viols. The whole thing has a trajectory from despair to triumph and love. This isn't something any composer of the time is known to have done, but it makes persuasive sense, and it does reflect an unusual feature of East's output, namely that he wrote secular pieces in the style of verse anthems. Thus, the mixture of sacred and secular here is something that an aristocratic patron of the day might have done or simply might have done if they had thought of it. The musicians take an additional step in linking this faraway time to the present day: they include a viols-and-voice work, Now my thoughts are at peace, by a contemporary composer, Jill Jarman; it neither is in the English Renaissance style nor uses its sound simply as a point of departure for contemporary reflections. A fascinating release that reveals new ideas on rehearings.
