Le premier album des Leaders Of The New School sorti en 1991, A Future Without A Past, symbolise bien cette vague rap new-yorkaise un peu insouciante, que De La Soul ou A Tribe Called Quest incarnaient à la perfection, et que le Wu-Tang viendra bousculer en 1993. Au sein du groupe, il y a Charlie Brown, Dinco D, Cut Monitor Milo et surtout un certain Busta Rhymes. Privilégiant de superbes samples de jazz piochés chez Hugo Montenegro, Ramsey Lewis ou Ornette Coleman, notamment sur le superbe Sobb Story, les LOTNS participent à l’émancipation du sampling vers des sonorités plus complexes, plus dissonantes, sans que la mémoire collective ne les consacre réellement. Le genre de disque qui n’a pas eu le succès escompté à sa sortie, mais qui, au fil des ans et de la redéfinition par l’histoire, a obtenu la considération qu’il mérite. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
