About Playlist
Voces8 is a British vocal ensemble that began in 2005, founded by brothers Paul and Barnaby Smith. The group has evolved considerably since, alongside the many changes in its members. After a notable appearance at the Venezia Musica international festival Voces8 went professional, and recorded the album Evensong (2008). They signed with the Signum Classics label shortly after, and would later switch to Decca. Evensong was followed by Aces High (2010), Christmas (2012), and A Purcell Collection (2014), with the BBC Magazine award-winning French orchestra Les Inventions. The group promotes contemporary composers, a commitment showcased in their album Winter (2016), which includes compositions by Peteris Vasks, Arvo Pärt, Ola Gjeilo, Jan Sandström, Olafur Arnalds and Rebecca Dale. In 2019, their album Enchanted Isle features a range of pieces by Thomas Adès, John Tavener, Samuel Barber, Enya, Massive Attack and even Radiohead, alongside some more traditional tunes. The following year saw the release of the ambitious After Silence project, in which pieces by William Byrd, Monteverdi and Bach were performed alongside a selection of contemporary vocal scores. The ensemble is highly regarded by choral music lovers and regularly performs on major world tours. Its unique timbre is unanimously recognised by critics for its purity and precision. In 2023 Voces8 released Home, an album devoted exclusively to the works of Eric Whitacre.
