About Playlist

The Tragically Hip has been at the heart of the Canadian musical zeitgeist, evoking a strong emotional connection between their music and their fans that remains unrivaled. A five-piece group of friends including Rob Baker (guitar), Gord Downie (vocals, guitar), Johnny Fay (drums), Paul Langlois (guitar) and Gord Sinclair (bass), who grew up in Kingston, Ontario, The Tragically Hip have achieved both mass popularity with more than 10 million albums sold in Canada and over 1.5 million sold in the U.S, as well as peer recognition through 17 Juno Awards—picking up the distinguished Humanitarian Award in 2021. Here, the band hand-picked their favorite songs and annotated a selection—including archival notes from Downie, who died of brain cancer in October 2017—exclusively for Qobuz. "Get Back Again" We recorded it before the Up To Here sessions, we were playing, demoing and writing ferociously. "Get Back Again" was penciled in as a palette-cleansing acoustic number, until we wrote "38 Years Old." So it basically bumped "Get Back Again" off the record and into the vaults. We were always working on new ideas and trying to come up with new songs. So we never really got back to it until 2024 for the Up To Here box set." - Gord Sinclair "Wheat Kings" It’s been said that there is nothing stronger than a mother’s arms when her child is in trouble. Another of my first tries at historical narrative, this one more cloaked, hidden. For certain, and like many, I was touched by this story of a seventeen year old man imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. But, it was Joyce, David Milgaard’s mother, whose dogged and unrelenting belief—over three decades—in her son’s innocence that got me the most. - Gord Downie "Bobcaygeon" A nice acoustic riff of Rob Baker’s that we were jamming on. Fortunately, Gord Downie came up with those words that obviously seemed to have resonated with people. It was a nice vibe, we always tried to throw that kind of vibe one or two times on a record, more of an acoustic feel. It’s all about the melody to Gord’s singing. - Paul Langlois "Little Bones" That riff is literally upside down, because of how I play it in between all the singing. After the intro, there’s a re-intro, and as soon as Gord Downie starts singing, I play an extra couple of notes, and then they repeat — and then the pattern changes underneath what Gord is singing. The intro always seems to confuse people who try to play it themselves, and I don’t know why. It’s just the way I played it. - Paul Langlois "Long Time Running" With "Long Time Running," I gotta give it up to Don Smith, the producer jockey. He was slowing the racehorse down, knowing we were gonna burn out at the first post. He taught us how to make it last and how to have that sonic, performative impact in what we were doing. - Gord Sinclair "Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)" I was reading Hugh MacLennan's The Watch That Ends The Night at the time. I came across this passage: "But that night as I drove back to Montreal, I at least discovered this: there is no simple explanation for anything important any of us do, and the human tragedy, or the human irony, consists in the necessity of living with the consequences of actions performed under the pressure of compulsions so obscure we do not and cannot understand them." I paraphrased it to fit the confines of the melody and dedicated the song to Mr. MacLennan. - Gord Downie "Poets" It’s this Stonesy kind of rock 'n' roll thing. It evolved from us playing around and Gord Downie putting lyrics on top. He wasn’t super happy with the song, only sang it a couple times. There’s only a couple versions, and I don’t think he anticipated it being on the record. It turned out to be the lead track and one of our biggest songs. - Gord Sinclair "Fireworks" Very straight-ahead, three-chord rock song that was fun to play. And Gord had great lyrics that meant something to all of us. It’s funny, in a way it’s kind of something to all of us. It’s funny to suddenly have interests other than hockey, like girls. - Rob Baker "Three Pistols" "Three Pistols” is a song where I’m holding the chords down, and Robby’s dancing around on top. That’s just the natural way we do songs like this one. Musically, we were pretty tight back then. We were playing well together because we were playing all the time. We had a secret language where we could just feel what to do. - Paul Langlois "Locked In The Trunk Of A Car" The genesis of this idea came from playing "New Orleans Is Sinking" every night. We specifically gave ourselves the space to jam in the middle of the song before the final chorus and the song began to take shape over the course of touring Road Apples. We would work on it during soundchecks and expand on it every night playing live. - Gord Sinclair "Cordelia" I studied with jazz drummers like Jim Blackley, and Jim’s whole approach was like that of a ballroom dancer, which he was himself. He was like, "If you can dance, you can play drums. You just have to apply that same muscle group." So I always had those kinds of things and different grips at my fingertips. I mean, I wanted to be Neil Peart [of Rush]—I even dressed up like him for Halloween—but "Cordelia" needed a different feel. - Johnny Fay "Fifty-Mission Cap" On this record I started to venture, a little bit, into historical narratives. This one was the most straight-ahead, literally taken from the back of a hockey card. - Gord Downie "Twist My Arm" "Twist My Arm" is a song where Johnny and I stopped thinking about playing it right, and really started listening to each other. You can really hear Johnny and I actually listening to each other play here. We just let it go, realizing that every take wasn’t going to be the perfect take. We could just let it sit back in the pocket, and not try to run 800-meter races like we were trying to do them as 100-meter dashes. - Gord Sinclair "Looking For A Place To Happen" Not the first—nor last—of our self reflective songs. I was, obviously, drawing on our experiences as a traveling band, romanticizing—on a sliding scale—the world we were moving through. Fact is, our wildest dreams were coming true, we really were starting to see the world. - Gord Downie "Fully Completely" I remember this record feeling like the beginning of a new kind of songwriting for us—an arrival, of sorts, at a new place. The song "Fully Completely" was an apt choice for album title, because it really embodied a lot of where we were at and where we wanted to go, with its non-traditional arrangement leaning heavily on aspects of mood and atmosphere, on attitude and dynamics. - Gord Downie Photo © Gordon Hawkins
