About Playlist

Formed in Melbourne in 1999, The Cat Empire are masters of musical fusion, blending jazz, ska, funk, rock, and Latin rhythms into a joyous, genre-bending sound. The original lineup featured Felix Riebl (vocals, percussion), Harry James Angus (trumpet, vocals), Ollie McGill (keyboards), Will Hull-Brown (drums), Jamshid “Jumps” Khadiwhala (decks, percussion), and Ryan Monro (bass), often joined by the dynamic brass duo The Empire Horns. Born out of the jazz scene and rooted in improvisation, the band first gained traction with their 2003 debut album The Cat Empire, powered by the infectious single "Hello" which received airplay on BBC Radio 1. Their follow-up, Two Shoes (2005), recorded in Havana, Cuba, leaned deeper into Latin grooves and debuted at number one in Australia—their most commercially successful release to date. Renowned for their explosive live shows, The Cat Empire have earned a global following, igniting crowds at major festivals such as Glastonbury, Montreux Jazz Festival, and Roskilde. Their concerts are musical carnivals, marked by improvisation, tight musicianship, and pure celebration. While their lineup has evolved over time, the band’s spirit remains intact: multicultural, uplifting, and dance-inducing.
