About Playlist
Following in the footsteps of the Rolling Stones, another major band once took on the indomitable Beatles. In 1965, the uppercut from a group of young Californians was enough to shake the kings of English pop. "Mr. Tambourine Man," the Byrds' first single, reached number one in the English charts. Other Bob Dylan covers brought them luck, in particular "Turn! Turn! Turn!," the fertile ground on which they created a new genre, folk rock. The '60s witnessed the band's various explorations, from psychedelic rock (Fifth Dimension) to country—Notorious Byrd Brothers and Sweetheart of The Rodeo, whose legendary Gram Parsons was the architect. The Byrds paved the way for a number of songwriters, including Gene Clark, David Crosby and Jim McGuinn, who went on to become legends both as solo artists and in other bands.
